To begin a root canal, the doctor drills a small opening in the crown. The doctor removes the pulp, cleans, and sanitizes the tooth's interior. Special tools like apex locators help determine the root length to ensure the doctor reaches all infected material.

After cleaning the tooth and clearing any lingering infection, the endodontist refills the tooth with a biocompatible substance called gutta-percha. The patient's general dentist will then provide a filling or crown to complete the restoration, usually 2-3 weeks following completion of the root canal treatment.
