Non-Surgical Endodontics in New Jersey

What Is Non-Surgical Endodontics?

Non-surgical endodontics involves treating damaged or infected teeth, roots and pulp chambers. Non-surgical procedures involve:

  • Opening the pulp chamber
  • Cleaning and disinfecting the tooth's interior
  • Refilling it with a material to seal out contamination
  • Restoring the tooth

Benefits of Non-Surgical Endodontics

  • Saves Teeth
Non-surgical endodontic procedures like root canals and retreatment save teeth that would otherwise need extraction. If the tooth retains enough structure after experiencing damage or severe decay, an endodontist can clean, sanitize, and stabilize it.
  • Relieves Discomfort
Many patients who need endodontic treatment are in significant pain. Chewing or biting on the affected tooth can cause problems with pain or sensitivity to heat and cold. A root canal or endodontic retreatment provides relief from discomfort.
  • Preserves Natural Root System
When a tooth can receive endodontic treatment instead of extraction, the patient keeps their natural root system. The patient's other teeth will not drift into the space left by an extracted tooth, causing alignment problems, tooth decay, and gum disease.

Modern Micro Endodontics provides non-surgical endodontic procedures. Please contact us at one of our five convenient New Jersey locations to schedule an appointment.

Root Canal Treatment

Infection or inflammation of the nerves inside the pulp is a painful condition. Root canals remove inflamed or infected pulp from the tooth's interior, including the pulp chamber and root system.

To begin a root canal, the doctor drills a small opening in the crown. The doctor removes the pulp, cleans, and sanitizes the tooth's interior. Special tools like apex locators help determine the root length to ensure the doctor reaches all infected material.

After cleaning the tooth and clearing any lingering infection, the endodontist refills the tooth with a biocompatible substance called gutta-percha. The patient's general dentist will then provide a filling or crown to complete the restoration, usually 2-3 weeks following completion of the root canal treatment.

Endodontic Retreatment

While most root canals are successful and last for many years, occasionally, a tooth will need retreatment. Infection or inflammation may recur due to leakage of the current root canal system caused by damage/wear of the existing restoration.

Root canal retreatment involves opening the tooth's crown a second time and repeating the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Non-Surgical Endodontics

What are some of the signs of a failed root canal?

If your tooth needs endodontic retreatment, the symptoms will be very similar to those that indicate the need for a root canal. These symptoms include:

  • Severe toothache, especially when biting or chewing
  • Pimple-like swellings on the gum (dental abscess)
  • Swollen gum
  • A darkened tooth that may appear gray or black
  • Fever and chills
Why is a root canal better than an extraction?
Preserving your natural tooth provides advantages for your oral health and your budget. A root canal may seem costly, but it is less than a restoration like a bridge or dental implant. When the natural root system stays in place, the jawbone stays healthy, and neighboring teeth will not shift.
What should I do if I feel pain in a tooth that previously had a root canal?
See an endodontist immediately to prevent further complications and tooth loss.
How long does a tooth last after endodontic retreatment?
A repeat root canal should last many years and possibly a lifetime. Excellent home care can extend the life of your retreated tooth.
How many times can I have a tooth retreated before it needs extraction?
Endodontists can repeat the procedure two or even three times. If you visit a highly skilled endodontist, it is less likely that you will need multiple procedures.
Will I need a new crown after endodontic retreatment?
Yes, you will most likely need a new crown for your tooth.
Can I eat after a root canal or endodontic retreatment?
Be careful when you eat, especially if you have a temporary filling. Chew on the opposite side of your mouth until you have received your permanent crown or filling.
How can I help prevent root canal retreatment?
Taking excellent care of your teeth, including brushing and flossing as recommended by your dentist, is a must for preserving your oral health. Home care is even more important if you have teeth that have undergone root canals. Regular recall visits with your dentist will also aid in monitoring the condition of any root canal treated teeth.
